Many Swedes know the secrets of Öland, the island near by the East coast of Småland. That it is warmer than on the Mainland for instance and the amount of sunshine is much higher as well as the number of hidden garden café, galleries, gardens, varied wildlife and seafood restaurants. Their favourite time of year is May, when the tourists have not taken over the island yet and it is immersed in the scent of lilacs. The first garden café’s open their doors, on the beaches you can find fossils and on the limestone plateau you stumble on the wild orchids and Öland’s rockrose. Lovely to tour around this island without card or tomtom, just follow signs to ceramics studios, flea markets, small wooden windmills and quaint country shops.
